Ron Low the Real Life Oor Wullie : A brief
biography |
| Ronald Watterston Duncan Low, was born on the 21st April 1927 in Dundee Scotland. He lived in Dundee with his parents, going to Dundee High School, graduating from school in 1943 and then going to St Andrews University to study medicine. He always had a love of flying and planes and was a member of the local Air Cadets and University Flying Club. He met his future wife Elsie Sturrock of Whigstreet, Angus at St Andrews University and they married in April 1952 before embarking on a successful career as a GP in Lochinver before joining the RCAF. Although he downplayed his obviously famous association he did have many of the traits made famous by the towsel haired laddie. He loved Scotland and even after living his dream of being a doctor and a pilot in the RCAF which took him overseas to Canada and later Germany he returned to work in Raigmore Hospital in Inverness in 1977 as Chief of Occupational Health. This move back to Scotland allowed him to travel around the Highlands and Islands which was where he loved it the most. Just like Oor Wullie he loved his food and although he
was never keen on breakfast he would never miss his tea! His wife Elsie
was a fabulous cook so he was a very happy man but now and again he liked
to cook himself, one of his more famous recipes was mince and tatties
and the family would often have mince and tatties for tea in front of
the TV! Ron was an avid reader and loved doing crosswords, the Sunday
Times was a favorite one, and he would often finish it before the following
day. He was humorous, loved a good joke and was a fan of Scottish comedians
such as Rikki Fulton and Billy Connolly. He was also a sportsman playing single handicap golf
and was a very skilled fly-fisherman. He used to fish with his son Ronald
on the River Isla near Tulchan Lodge in Glenisla, Angus north of Dundee
and also on Loch Tay near Killin. He was also a rugby supporter and played
for the Dundee High School 1st XV in his day. Dundee High School was conveniently
located across the street from DC Thomson headquarters where he would
often see his father in the office. Ron's, father, RD Low, was a sharp
witted man who loved his work. He would give Broons and Oor Wullie annuals
to his grandchildren for Xmas signed "The Editor" and he always
looked forward to trips back to Dundee to visit his extended family. |
| My thanks to Ronald William Robert Low (Ron's son) for submitting this information and the following photos. |

A picture of young Ron Low taken around
1932. His little dog looks very like a dog that occasionally appeared
in paintings and drawings by Dudley Watkins seen in the boy's story papers
in the 1930's |

Taken around 1935 when Ron was first
drawn as Oor Wullie. This shows the young Ron and his sister Marion (aka
Bunty). Marion was the model for Bunty (the lead character in DC Thomson's
girl's comic of the same name). |

This picture was taken in 1940 at
the family home Ashbank, in Dundee. Along with Ron is his best friend Ian (Soapy) Soutar who of course was included in the famous comic strip. The family dog is Kala Nag. |
